Recent referrals are a good thing to ask for, I agree, though I’ll probably just stick to checking reviews online as you suggested. I didn’t know that locksmiths need to be certified with the Associated Locksmiths of America, and I’ll definitely check the locksmiths’ websites, and talk to them, to be sure they are certified properly.
